Matthew T. Herbst has played the major role in shaping the educational mission of Eleanor Roosevelt College at UC San Diego. As the director of the Making of the Modern World program, he ably leads an enterprise that teaches more than three thousand students each year. As a teacher he has earned the reputation of being one of the very best on campus: In evaluations many students declare that he is the best teacher they have ever had. Many of Dr. Herbst’s enormously enriching array of courses and seminars are of his own creation and uniquely combine experiences with reflection upon historical and cultural context. Whether students trek up sacred mountains, travel to the desert, or participate in service learning in foreign countries, they have a profound, transformative experience that goes beyond anything normally offered in other academic departments. Dr. Herbst is making a valuable contribution to Eleanor Roosevelt College’s mission of fostering global citizenship.
